Flash-Rust Control in Waterborne Anti-Corrosion Primers
Flash rust — the rapid orange spotting on blast-cleaned steel within minutes of a waterborne coating being applied — is the most common field complaint in waterborne anti-corrosion work. It is a corrosion cell, not a drying defect.
Three levers that actually work
- Add QD004 anti-flash-rust agent at 0.5–2% on total formulation. It interrupts the cathodic reaction at the steel interface without hurting recoatability or salt-spray performance.
- Keep the system pH in range. Epoxy dispersions EP136–EP141 are optimized around pH 7.5–8.5; drifting acidic accelerates rusting and destabilizes the emulsion.
- Respect the film-formation window. Apply at steel temperature ≥ 3 °C above dew point and keep the film above MFFT until coalescence completes.
System context
In zinc-rich systems (EP138 + EH3512), QD004 is compatible with the zinc slurry; verify with a 24 h slurry-stability panel before line trials. For shop primers on WE-series epoxy esters, 1% QD004 is normally sufficient even at 80%+ relative humidity.
